Considering a new home?

Are you thinking about moving to a retirement home?

Retiring is a new and exciting phase of life. Suddenly the world is your oyster and it’s often the time people decide to downsize to a retirement home, possibly moving to a completely new location.

There are many things for people to consider before taking the plunge.

Location

Location is probably the number one consideration. No longer having to be close to the office, people have the freedom to choose where to live. Some may move just a few miles down the road, but others might be more adventurous and move to a completely new place - perhaps to be closer to family or because they have always wanted to live there.

If people are venturing to pastures new, we recommend they spend a good amount of time there to get to know the area and make sure it will suit them now and in the future.

Living in a rural idyll may be ideal for someone who is fit and healthy now; but they need to the future too, when they might need good access to hospitals, local shops and transport links.

Do you want to buy a smaller home or rent in retirement?

Renting a retirement property can be a good solution for those who don’t want to worry about the cost and hassle of maintaining a home or want to free up capital from a house sale.

Renting in a retirement development not only provides great security but also provides access to an instant community as there tends to be plenty of social activities arranged making it easy for people to meet and make friends.

Usually, in a retirement development, each apartment will have a 24-hour care line in case of emergency and a house manager will be available on site too. Such support services may not be important in early retirement, but they may become essential as people get older.

Through Girlings, people can rent in retirement on assured tenancies – so they have a home for life if they want it. We know this is a big attraction for our residents.

Price is a major consideration too, whether buying or renting. Being realistic about the budget is crucial as most people will be reliant on pensions and savings, of which there is usually a finite amount of money to last.

So if you are nearing retirement or you have already retired, and are thinking about moving to a retirement home, make sure you do your homework and you consider what you require to have a long and happy retirement.
